Emotional Support Animal (ESA) Letters
Many people experience comfort, grounding, and reduced symptoms of anxiety or depression through the companionship of an animal. An Emotional Support Animal (ESA) is a pet that provides therapeutic benefit simply through companionship. Unlike service animals, ESAs are not trained to perform specific tasks—but they can be recognized under federal housing laws and may qualify for certain accommodations with appropriate documentation.
What I Provide
As a licensed clinical social worker, I am able to provide evaluations and documentation for Emotional Support Animals when clinically appropriate. This process includes:
- Clinical evaluation – reviewing your mental health history, current symptoms, and treatment needs.
- Assessment of ESA benefit – determining whether an ESA is likely to reduce symptoms or improve functioning.
- Formal documentation – if clinically indicated, I provide a written ESA letter that can be submitted to landlords or housing providers in compliance with the Fair Housing Act.
Important Notes
- I do not guarantee letters: An ESA letter will only be provided if, after evaluation, it is clinically justified.
- Housing vs. travel: ESA letters apply to housing accommodations. Airlines no longer universally recognize ESAs, so ESA letters may not guarantee travel accommodations.
- Not a substitute for therapy: ESA evaluations are separate from ongoing therapy. Some clients choose to pursue both.
- Must be a client for at least 30 days to qualify.
Fees
- ESA evaluation: $200 for initial diagnostic session ; 2-3 additional sessions at $150/ea.
- ESA letter (if appropriate): included in evaluation fee.
- Updates/renewals: Letters are valid for one year. Renewal requires a brief reassessment.
ESA evaluations are not covered by insurance and are billed directly to the client.
